Coping well in a new environment

Strategies to ease moving home anxieties

Life in a brand new apartment can be daunting for some and thrilling for others- so what if you’re finding the change difficult to cope with? This article aims to look at just some of the ways you can approach the strangeness that sometimes accompanies moving out of your old home and into a new one.

Though it is usually balanced with a genuine excitement for moving, anxiety can mean many things- but for lots of people over 55 and moving home, it can mean feeling sensitive about moving, not wanting to discuss the move, right through to exhibiting deep sadness and having unnecessary concerns for the change. These are all very common reactions to moving, and they warrant care and attention.

When we talk about the disruption that change can bring, what we’re really talking about is an imbalance of life as we know it. One minute, things are fine and great and the next, a challenging adjustment is on the horizon and we need to deal with it to find a new way to be comfortable. If we could look at the challenges that change brings objectively, it can be easier to overcome.

So what are some effective ways for managing the anxiety associated with moving home?

Take the process slowly.

Don’t attempt to take on huge tasks alone, especially tasks that require you to physically wear out! Working with a clear head and taking lots of breaks is the best plan of attack. For big packing problems, start as early as you can before the move and compartmentalise the tasks into smaller jobs to be accomplished to stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed.

Making your house a home.

If you’re already settled, the most difficult part is done. What is important now, is finding balance in your new environment. While this can be as simple as setting up your favourite trinkets or hanging your favourite photographs and pictures, it also means venturing into your new outer environment, exploring your new city connecting with your new community.

Getting to know your new neighbourhood.

You don’t have to start big! Make it enjoyable, and simple, for example, find out where the best ice-cream shop is and take a relaxing walk while you enjoy yourself. Remember; you’re home. There’s no real hurry.
