Studies that support community during retirement
It’s not a secret that a healthy and happy retirement boils down to a balance of many aspects of a great life. When you’ve found the right retirement situation for you, so much of the important work is done.
If you’re finding aspects of retirement unfamiliar, you’re definitely not alone - in fact, most people go through a stage during the initial phases of their retirement where they feel out of place or at a loss for what to do. This is why it’s so important to plan your retirement effectively and avoid the shock of a huge transition very early on. A great retirement:
So how do you get it right?
It’s important to know that one factor that regularly influences the degree of satisfaction that retirees have with their situation, is the level of engagement in their community. Being instrumental in the lives of others, contributing through work, play, or both is essential.
A study recently undertaken by Britain’s Office for National Statistics showed that retirees felt healthier and happier than they had during their 30s. The study was undertaken by researchers and using candidates in their late sixties who now had the time to engage in community activities they previously had no time for.
With results that showed a drop in anxiety and depression in close to a third of those candidates, results were seen in a positive light for those interviewed in ages between early fifties and late sixties.
An important aspect of a French study undertaken on more than 429,000 workers showed that not delaying retirement held links to the development of amnesia. It found that someone retiring at the age of 65 was around 15% less likely to develop amnesia than that of an individual who retired at 60. It is suggested that consistency in your engagement of work plays a major role in your health.
We know that interaction with your community in retirement is imperative to a calm and easy transition, and this is especially true if you’re considering the move to a retirement village. It’s important in your retirement to remain effective and active in your interests, so much that it dictates how healthy your retirement will be.
