Many people find the initial stages of retirement very different to the life they’re so familiar with, especially if you’re not from the Gold Coast originally. In fact, some retirees need to adapt to new routines, environments, and changes that mean shuffling day to day activities in order to fit things in, or so as not to become overwhelmed by limitless possibilities.
An interstate retirement brings significant change into a lifestyle, no matter how flexible it may be. So how do you make the most of it without feeling like too much is changing too fast?
We’ve put together some tips to help you deal with the initial stages of retirement when you move to the Gold Coast; the top 3 ways to get the most out of your new lifestyle.
1. Retirement doesn’t have to change what you like.
It’s very common for new arrivals to feel like getting involved and getting to know their community straight away. This is fantastic, especially if you’re a very social and active person. However, if you’re an introvert, you might find this concept overwhelming. This is ok! It takes time to settle and even more time to find your place in a new home. Keep your own pace and don’t feel as though you have to do everything at once.
2. Get enough rest.
It’s understandable when faced with so many new things to do, and places to see, that you may want to get amongst it as soon as possible. While this is fantastic, don’t forget to get plenty of rest and take even better care of your body in the new environment. Aim for at least 8 hours each night so your body can fully recover from any strenuous activities so you can get back out there and do it all again tomorrow.
3. Start local.
If you’ve moved from interstate and have found the initial process of moving into your new home in any way tiring, you’ll probably just want to rest and take it easy. Remember, there is no rush! Great retirement villages provide internal activities and social areas. Moving can be exhausting, so once you’ve recuperated, start slowly. You might start with a swim in the pool or a stroll on the beach, but save something new for each day!
